OMG

“OMG”. Little Sally had been saying that a lot lately. She had heard someone on tv say ‘oh my God’, and when she said it, Mother told her not to take the Lord’s name in vain, “He is a gift”, if she heard it again she would get a spanking. Little Sally didn’t get it, didn’t know what ‘vain’ meant, definitely didn’t want a spanking. She asked Grandma, who said Mother thumped the Bible a bit much. Older Sister said, “Just say OMG”, so that’s what she was doing, not taking anything in vain. Mother just rolled her eyes.

Charli Mills latest… September 12, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes the greatest gift. Answer it as if it were a question, or show what it could be. Go where the prompt leads you!

That 99 words always throws me off, I write 100 and realize it’s 99 and have to take 1 out. Here’s my story this week for the Literary Community.

The Safebreaker’s Daughter

“Hi, Ethel, how’s the crime story? Did the guy find his keys?”
“I didn’t like that he lost the keys, so I changed it.”
“Ethel! You are the one who wrote that he lost his keys!”
“Whatever, Cheryl, now the bad guy is a woman.”
“Okay. How far have you gotten.”
“Nothing written yet, but it’s a great plot. She’s following in the footsteps of her father. He’s in prison for burglary. It’s called The Safebreaker’s Daughter.”
“I think it’s safecracker.”
“No it’s safebreaker, it takes place in London. That’s what Betty said they’re called, and she’s half English.”

“Hi, it’s Cheryl.”
“Hello.”
“Look, I apologize, for how I treated you, Ethel. I was thoughtless treating my best friend that way.”
“Well, thank you, I won’t stay mad forever.”
“Good, because I got tickets to your favorite band to make up for it.”
“My favorite band?”
“The Stones! Playing at Soldier Field! Remember when we saw them in ’64.”
“They were your favorite band, Cheryl, I liked the Beatles. I didn’t like that Mick, the way he jumped around.”
“Well you like him now, right?”
“Of course, silly, they became my second favorite band right after that show.”

(This is the end of this story, the first part was here… One Day!)

The Rolling Stones: 2019 "No Filter" Tour Opener - Chicago

The Rolling Stones kick off the North American run of their ‘NO FILTER’ Tour at Soldier Field in Chicago, IL on Friday, June 21, 2019

I’m sure Ethel and Cheryl enjoyed the show that night. My friend Catherine saw them in New Orleans with The Librarian on July 15th, and I will be attending their Seattle show with Ashley on August 14th! The last time I saw the stones was in 1966 in Sacramento with 3,000 other fans.

One Day!

working-template-for-ff-challenges41

“For one day, Ethel! Is it too much to ask to have just one day when you don’t call me with some crazy request? A damn waterpark, really?”
“Oh. I’m sorry to have made you feel this way. I’m going to cry. I’m going to hang up now, Cheryl, you have hurt my feelings.”

Their phones do not ring each other for two days.

“Hi Ethel, it’s me, Cheryl.”
“I know who it is.”
“I’m sorry, can you ever forgive me? I treated you terribly, I’m an awful friend.”
“Yes.”
“You forgive me? Or I’m awful?”

July 25: Flash Fiction Challenge… I realize this is a departure from a true flash fiction story, as there is no end… yet.

This was the prompt…  In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes the phrase “for one day.”

California Stop

“Ethel!”, screams Cheryl.
“What?”
“You didn’t stop!”
“Didn’t stop?”
“At the corner, no stop.”
“Yes I did, I always stop at stop signs.”
“No, you were rolling, that doesn’t count as a stop. And the sign says stop.”
“Oh for God’s sake, Cheryl, don’t be so picky. That was enough of a stop. You never yell at Betty when she drives.”
“That’s because Betty always stops at signs. You made a California stop.”
“What are you talking about, we’re in Chicago?”
“That’s what they call a rolling stop. You rolled.”

Ethel sighs as she rolls thru the next stop.
