“Where are they?”

“Where are what?”  Ethel continued to pick crumbs from the white damask tablecloth, waiting.

“The cats and dogs.”

“Oh holy Mary dear mother of God!  It’s a weather expression, Cheryl”

  5. I’ve never understood the expression. It’s weird, isn’t it?

Good job surronding the prompt with dialogue.

    Great piece Ted.
    Cheers, Eric

Adorable 33 word story, by the way. I got a chuckle out of it. 😉

    1. Why! Yep… thanks for this.

  9. This is funny Ted. You actually got me wondering how this expression came into being.
Btw, shouldn’t it be “where are who?” as the previous dialog asks “where are they” – they implying living things?

      1. Hey, great, P! Thanks… I’ve not seen this one.

  10. I also found something – The first recorded use of a phrase similar to “raining cats and dogs” was in the 1651 collection of poems Olor Iscanus. British poet Henry Vaughan referred to a roof that was secure against “dogs and cats rained in shower.”

Either way this made me laugh Ted – Of course it was said in a fine Irish lilt? 😉

  11. I could hear the Irish brogue in this, Ted. Well done, nice one.
